Ultrasound, also called a sonogram, uses sound waves to build images of your organs on a screen, with no needles and no radiation. At Clínica Hispana Cruz 2 we use it to look at the abdomen, pelvis, pregnancy, thyroid and lumps under the skin, and we explain what we see in Spanish or English.

Which scans do we do?

Abdominal: liver, gallbladder, kidneys and other organs in the belly
Pelvic: uterus, ovaries and bladder
Pregnancy, to follow the baby's growth
Thyroid, to check for nodules in the neck
Soft tissue, for lumps or swelling under the skin

How do I prepare?

Abdominal: don't eat for a few hours beforehand so the gallbladder shows up clearly
Pelvic: drink several glasses of water and hold off on peeing until the scan
Pregnancy, thyroid and soft tissue: usually no prep needed
A top with pants or a skirt rather than a dress, so you only uncover the part being scanned

What does it feel like?

You lie on the exam table, a warm gel goes on your skin and a handheld probe glides over it to capture the images. The probe presses a little, which you'll notice more with a full bladder, but the scan is painless. Afterward you wipe off the gel and get back to your day.

Why is it ordered?

It helps look into pain on the right side of the belly that could be gallstones, pelvic bleeding or pain, urinary problems that keep coming back, or a lump that showed up out of nowhere. In pregnancy it shows how the baby is growing. The medical team connects the images with your gynecology visit or your pregnancy test to decide the next step, and if another scan is needed, they point you to where to get it.

Because a full bladder pushes the bowel up and out of the way, giving a clearer view of the uterus and ovaries. Drink water before the scan and hold it; if you go beforehand, we may need to wait for your bladder to fill up again.

No. It's a water-based gel that wipes off with a paper towel when we're done. Still, loose two-piece clothing makes it easier to uncover only the area being scanned and keeps you more comfortable.

Yes, it's a useful scan for looking at the gallbladder and kidneys when you have belly or back pain. If the images don't explain the cause, the medical team tells you which other test makes sense and where to get it.
