Exam first. The medical team looks at the size, location and appearance of the growth, and asks how long you've had it and whether it has changed. If it isn't a good fit for minor surgery, for example because it's very large or in a delicate spot, they help arrange a referral to a specialist.
What is the procedure like?
The skin is cleaned, local anesthetic goes in through a thin needle, and once the area is numb the growth is removed. You'll typically feel pressure or tugging rather than sharp pain; if anything hurts, say so and more anesthetic is given. Stitches close it if needed, a bandage goes on top, and you walk out on your own.
What should you mention beforehand?
- Aspirin, blood thinners or supplements that affect clotting
- Allergies to anesthetics or antiseptics
- Diabetes or a history of slow healing
- Pregnancy
When to call us or head to the ER afterward
Some soreness and a bruise around the site are normal. Call us if the wound opens, turns red and warm or drains pus; go to the ER if it keeps bleeding despite pressure or you run a high fever. Follow-up checks and stitch removal are handled through wound care.
