Fever, body aches, cough and a scratchy throat: flu, COVID and other respiratory viruses start out in similar ways, and it's hard to know which one you have from symptoms alone. At Clínica Hispana Cruz 2 we run rapid flu and COVID tests during the visit, so you know what it is and what care you and your family need.

How the test works
A sample is taken with a nasal swab. It's quick, uncomfortable for a few seconds, and the result is ready while you wait at the clinic. With that answer, the medical team decides whether an antiviral makes sense, since it works best when started in the first days of symptoms, or whether you only need relief for fever, cough and congestion.
Antibiotics only when they help
Most of these infections are viral, and antibiotics don't cure them. We prescribe them when there are signs of a bacterial infection, as in some cases of sinusitis, ear infection or pneumonia. That spares you side effects you don't need. If your symptoms are seasonal and come back every year, it may be allergies.

Go to the ER or call 911 for severe trouble breathing, bluish lips, strong chest pain, confusion or, in babies, if they stop eating or wetting diapers.

Frequently Asked Questions
As soon as possible once symptoms start, especially if you're over 65, pregnant or living with diabetes, asthma or another chronic condition. If it comes back negative very early and you still feel sick, the medical team may repeat it or look for another cause.
CDC guidance says to return once your symptoms are improving overall and you've gone a full day without fever and without fever-reducing medicine. For the next few days, wear a mask and wash your hands often.
