Men's Health: Prostate Exam (PSA) in Houston

Prostate exam with blood PSA, hormone panel and general checkup for men in north Houston. In Spanish, walk-ins welcome, no insurance needed.

Many men only go to the clinic when something hurts, and several problems that are easy to treat early cause few symptoms. At Clínica Hispana Cruz 2 we run checkups designed for men, with blood work and a visit in Spanish where you can ask anything with confidence.

The prostate and PSA

PSA is a protein made by the prostate and measured with a blood sample. A high value doesn't always mean cancer: it also rises with benign prostate enlargement or an infection. That's why testing is an informed decision; U.S. prevention guidelines (USPSTF) suggest discussing it between ages 55 and 69, and other guidelines suggest starting earlier when it runs in the family.

Symptoms worth checking

  • A weak flow, or still feeling the urge right after you go
  • Waking up two or more times a night to use the bathroom
  • Burning or blood in the urine
  • Fatigue, low energy or lower sex drive
  • Mood changes or loss of muscle mass

Hormone checkup

Low testosterone can cause fatigue and lower desire, but the same symptoms show up with diabetes, a slow thyroid, poor sleep or depression. That's why we measure it in a morning sample, when the level is steadiest, and read it alongside your glucose and cholesterol and your thyroid.

What happens with your result

The medical team walks you through every number. If something is out of range, the test is repeated or a prostate ultrasound is ordered. For intimate symptoms or a new partner, we also offer STD testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not necessarily. PSA is measured in the blood. If the medical team thinks a physical exam or a prostate ultrasound would help, they explain why and you decide.

No fasting needed. Avoid ejaculation and hard exercise, such as cycling, for two days beforehand, since they can raise the value slightly. If you're also checking your male hormone level, come in the morning.

A general checkup is worth it at any age. For PSA, the usual time to discuss it is from about 50 to 55, and earlier if your father or a brother had prostate cancer or if you are African American.
