The contraceptive implant is a flexible rod about the size of a matchstick placed under the skin of the arm. It protects for several years, but eventually it expires, you want to get pregnant or you'd simply rather use another method. At Clínica Hispana Cruz 2 we remove it in a short procedure, under local anesthesia and explained in Spanish.
How the procedure works
- We feel along the inner arm to find the rod
- The skin is disinfected and a numbing injection is given
- A very small cut of a few millimeters is made in the skin
- The rod is taken out and checked to make sure it's whole
- The cut is closed with adhesive strips and covered with a pressure bandage
Before you come in
If you kept the card or papers from when it was placed, bring them: they show the date and the type of implant. Tell us if you take blood thinners or have ever reacted badly to an anesthetic. You can eat normally and get back to your routine afterward, avoiding heavy lifting with that arm for a few days.
After removal
Keep the bandage on as long as instructed and the wound dry for the first few days. A bruise or mild tenderness is normal. Come back if you notice spreading redness, pus or fever.
What method comes next?
Protection ends as soon as the implant is out, and fertility returns quickly. If you're not trying to get pregnant, it's best to start another method right away; we'll explain the birth control options we offer. If you do want to conceive, a pregnancy test will tell you when it has happened. When the implant sits too deep or can't be felt, we guide the referral to locate it with imaging before removal.
