How can you tell a cut needs stitches?

The edges pull apart when you move that area
It keeps bleeding despite steady pressure with a clean cloth
It's deep enough that you can see yellowish tissue under the skin
It's on your face, a hand or over a joint like the knee

What should you do on the way?

Rinse the cut under running water, cover it with gauze or a clean cloth and press firmly. If you're wearing a ring near the wound, take it off before the finger swells. Skip powders, coffee grounds or home remedies on top; they only make cleaning harder.

How do we close it?

The medical team checks how deep the cut goes, whether anything is stuck inside and whether you can move and feel the area normally. Then they numb it with local anesthetic, wash it out thoroughly and stitch it closed. If it's been years since your last tetanus booster, you can get tetanus toxoid during the same visit.

When is the ER the better call?

Blood spurting out or not stopping with firm pressure
A fingertip or flap of skin that's nearly cut off
Bone showing, or an object stuck in the wound that shouldn't be pulled out
Weakness or numbness spreading beyond the cut

We also tell you when to come back to have the stitches taken out; that check happens through wound care.
