Stool Tests

Stool testing in north Houston for parasites, gut infections or hidden blood. We give you the container and explain how to collect the sample.

A stool test looks at a small sample of your bowel movement to find parasites, bacteria, blood you can't see with the naked eye or food that isn't being digested well. We order it for kids and adults with diarrhea that won't go away, frequent belly pain or changes in bowel habits with no clear reason.

What can it find?

  • Parasite eggs and cysts, such as amoeba or giardia
  • Signs of a bacterial gut infection
  • Hidden blood, when the medical team wants to rule it out
  • Fat or food your intestine isn't absorbing properly

How do I collect the sample at home?

  • Pick up the lidded container and a label with your name at the clinic
  • Catch the stool on clean plastic wrap or in a container so it doesn't touch toilet water or urine
  • Use the little scoop to take a walnut-sized portion, ideally from any part with mucus or blood
  • Close it tightly, write down the date and time, and bring it in as soon as you can

When is it worth doing?

When diarrhea has dragged on for several days, there's mucus or blood, others at home have the same symptoms or you came back from a trip with an upset stomach. Also if you're losing weight without trying or a child keeps complaining of tummy aches and eating little.

What happens with the result?

Results come back fast and the medical team explains them in Spanish or English. If a parasite or infection shows up, you get a treatment plan and advice on whether the people you live with should be treated too; the e-prescription is sent to the pharmacy you choose. If hidden blood is found, we guide your referral to a specialist for further testing.

When shouldn't you wait for a test?

If there's a lot of blood, a high fever, severe pain, or a baby or older adult with a dry mouth who's barely peeing, go to the ER.

Where do I drop off the container?

Bring it to 13331 Kuykendahl Rd Ste 128 in north Houston, any day from 9 AM to 9 PM. We tell you the price before you hand it in; cash and cards accepted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if the stool is formed or pasty: use the scoop to take a portion that isn't soaked with urine and put it in the container. If it's very watery and the diaper absorbs it, let us know and we'll explain another way to collect it.

Antacids, laxatives, mineral oil or recent antibiotics can interfere with the test. Don't stop them on your own: tell the medical team what you're taking and they'll let you know whether to wait before collecting the sample.

Sometimes. Some parasites don't show up in every bowel movement, so the medical team may ask for samples from different days to avoid missing an infection. We give you a container for each one.
