No Health Insurance in Houston? How to Get Care and Know the Price First
Three ways to get care without insurance in Houston: self-pay, Harris Health and the Marketplace. What to ask before you pay, plus fixed-price packages.
Without health insurance, you have three main routes in Houston: pay directly at a clinic that tells you its prices up front, apply for Harris Health financial assistance if you live in Harris County, or look for a plan on the HealthCare.gov Marketplace. Whichever you pick, the key is knowing what you'll pay before you're seen.
Which route fits your situation?
There's no single right answer. It comes down to what you need now and what you expect to need over the coming months. One simple way to sort it out:
- You need a visit, some lab work or a checkup soon: self-pay at a clinic is usually fastest, since there's no application or approval to wait on.
- You have a condition that calls for hospital care, specialists or complex imaging: find out whether you qualify for a county assistance program.
- You want year-round protection, emergencies included: check whether you can enroll in a Marketplace plan and get help paying for it.
Plenty of families mix and match, for example paying out of pocket for everyday needs while they wait for the next enrollment window.
How does self-pay work at Clínica Hispana Cruz 2?
Nobody asks for an insurance card. You walk in (or call to book a time), tell the front desk what you need in Spanish or English, and they give you the price. Payment is by cash, debit or credit card.
That covers, among other things, general and family medicine visits, diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol follow-up, blood work, urinary tract infections, pregnancy tests, flu and tetanus shots, stitches and wound care. Any medication the clinic's medical team prescribes during your visit can be handed to you on site.
What should you ask before paying?
Asking about cost isn't rude. It's the easiest way to avoid a surprise bill. Before anything starts, get clear answers to these:
- What is the exact price of the service I came for?
- Is the visit fee included, or is it charged separately?
- Which tests are part of that price, and which would be extra?
- If another test is recommended during the visit, will I hear the cost before it's done?
- Is there a package or promotion that already covers what I need?
When you call, have a short description of your symptom or paperwork ready, such as "school physical" or "blood sugar check." The more specific you are, the more precise the answer.
Fixed-price packages
If you're paying out of pocket, packages help because they bundle several tests under one price. These are the ones on the current flyers:
- General Exam, $89: general exam and urinalysis, with the visit free.
- $179, Women's Checkup with Ultrasound: a Pap smear, a pelvic ultrasound and a urinalysis, and the medical visit costs nothing extra. More on the gynecology page.
- Complete Men's Checkup, $149: PSA, hormone panel and general blood work, plus a free urinalysis and medical visit. Details under men's health.
- General Blood Panel + Vitamin B12, $99.
- Women's Intimate Health, $69 and Men's Intimate Health, $69.
- Complete STD Diagnosis, $249.
Promotional prices can change, so check the current offer on the promotions page or at the clinic.
When does Harris Health make sense?
Harris Health System is Harris County's public health system. It runs hospitals and community clinics and offers a financial assistance program for county residents who qualify. It's worth a look if you need ongoing care or hospital services you can't cover yourself.
The application asks for paperwork, such as proof of address and income, and approval isn't instant. If your health problem can't wait, you can be seen on a self-pay basis now and work on the application at the same time.
What about the HealthCare.gov Marketplace?
HealthCare.gov is where you compare and enroll in health plans. Depending on your income and circumstances, you may qualify for savings that lower your monthly premium. Open enrollment happens once a year. Outside that window you can only sign up after a qualifying life event, like losing job-based coverage, getting married or having a baby. Confirm the current dates on the official site.
What if it's an emergency?
Severe chest pain, trouble breathing, bleeding that won't stop or signs of a stroke mean calling 911 or heading to the nearest emergency room. Don't stop to compare prices in that situation. A walk-in clinic like this one is for problems that need attention soon but aren't an immediate threat to life.
